5. Robert Simpson Woodward
(1849-1924)

Woodward had a life-long interest in the earth--its shape, its tides, its atmosphere, and in geophysical problems.
He was a remarkably successful teacher and administrator at Columbia University (New York, New York) from 1893-1904. Woodward served as president of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, D.C. from 1904-1921, and was a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
